A Labloodhound Is A Cross between A Blood Hound And A Labrador Retriever
As with all cross breeds, the Labloodhound takes its characteristics directly from its parent breeds. That being said, let's have a look at the Bloodhound to see what it will add to the mix.
The Bloodhound has been around for a very long time and was originally bred to hunt deer and wild boar. Their very keen sense of smell is their main claim to fame.
These amazing animals can track a scent that is days old, over vast distances, ignoring all kinds of distractions on the way. They are tenacious and stubborn while on a tracking mission.
Bloodhounds are a similar size to Labradors, standing 23 to 27 inches at the withers.
This breed is a gentle, kind dog and makes a very good house pet. They are even tempered and affectionate.
They are not the easiest dogs in the world to train. Because of their stubbornness in tracking, they tend to be equally stubborn in other fields which is a problem when trying to convince them to participate in obedience training.
Next is the health problems encountered by the bloodhound. These dogs have the shortest average lifespan of all pure bred dogs, just 6,5 years.
The biggest problem appears to be Bloat as this is the largest single cause of death for this breed, approx. 34%. The second biggest killer is Cancer approx 27%.
They also have an uncommonly high incidence of skin disease as well as eye and ear infections.
Now knowing what we do about Bloodhounds as well as what we know about Labradors ( I am not going to rehash the Lab as this website is dedicated to them already), Lets see what we should get from a cross between these two.
Firstly we will almost definitely get a gentle warm loving house pet, one that you could safely have around small children.
As far as obedience training goes it's a toss up as to whether you will have a dog that is easy to train or not (not that a Bloodhound is untrainable, just not as easy as a Lab).
As far as health goes, it is accepted that a cross breed tends to be healthier than a pure bred dog under most circumstances. This means that although the bloodhound does not do too well in this department, this will more than likely not apply to a cross.
One very good thing would be the fact that you will have an animal that could find anything that you have lost as both breeds are good at this, specially the Bloodhound side.
All in all I would have to say that the Labloodhound looks like a very good pet to have around with very little chance of any negatives.
