The Labaire Is A Cross Between A Labrador Retriever and An Airdale Terrier

The Labaire is a cross between a Labrador Retriever and an Airedale Terrier.

To find out what we are likely to get when we cross these two breeds lets look at what their parent breeds are like.

Firstly both of these breeds were originally bred to be hunting dogs. But hunting dogs of very different types.

The Airedale Terrier was bred to actually kill the prey that its human companion wanted, while the Lab was bred only to retrieve the prey.

The Airedale's temperament is that of a terrier. These dogs are brave and they are fighters.

The Airedale is a medium sized breed (the largest of the terrier breeds). It has a hard wiry coat and a squareish head

Airedale Terriers

They were developed in Yorkshire, England in the mid 1800's by crossing the Otterhound with the Welsh Terrier, previously known as the old English rough-coated Black and Tan Terrier.

This was done specifically to hunt otters along the river.

They are intelligent dogs having been bred to hunt independently as well as to act as a retriever for the human hunter.

Airedales have been used as herding dogs as well, although if they are not very well trained, they end up agitating the animals that they are supposed to be herding.

Their chase instinct is well developed, this is after all what it was bred to do.

These dogs are loyal to their owners but do tend to be strong willed. They are not recommended for families with very small children.

The Lab is a far easier going animal than the Airedale. It is not a fighter, but is none the less a very brave dog. I will not go into the Lab’s nature too much as this has been covered very well on virtually every other page on this site.

With these dogs as parents, you are definitely going to have an intelligent dog. You will also have a brave dog.

From this point on the differences could be quite large. These dogs could be easy to train as both dogs are known as being trainable, but they could have a stubborn streak

The size of the two parent breeds are not too different, meaning that you will almost definitely have a medium sized dog.

For this cross to be a good family pet around small children, it will need to be very well trained. And so will the children. If the dog takes after the Airedale side of the family, it will not allow eye prodding and hair pulling the way a Lab would.

As far as what type of coat you would get. The lab has a smooth coat and the Airedale has a wiry hard coat, so anything in between is possible.

I have been reliably informed that Labaires make a good watchdogs, which in today’s world is important. Sad isn’t it.
